Practical information

For whom is uMail intended?
All registered students, staff and, in particular cases also guests, are assigned a web mailbox.

Students
Leiden University uses uMail as a tool for communication with students. Blackboard and uTwist regularly send mail, for example, a confirmation of registration for an exam. Faculties, departments and student organisations also send mail at regular intervals.

Staff
Leiden University uses the work mail address for communication with staff.  You may use your uMailbox for personal purposes

Guests
Leiden University uses the registered mail address for communication with guests. The facilities for guests page indicates which types of guests are assigned a uMailbox.
What does uMail consist of?
Logging in
You can log in to uMail using your ULCN account.

For staff, the ULCN password may be different from the password for the work station. For staff, the ULCN password may be different from the password for the work station. Forgotten your password? or not received your account details?
Quota
Quota exceeded
Avoid your mailbox becoming full; if your mailbox is over the limit, you will no longer be able to receive mail. Each user has a maximum of 100 Mb available for storage of mail. You can check the status of your quota via the menu option "Quota" at the top of the mail programme.

Example: Used: 101.51MB / Quota: 110.00MB (92.27%)

Clearing out your mailbox
Once your mailbox reached 90% of its quota, you should clear out unwanted mails by removing your sent items, for example, or emptying the deleted items. There are two steps to removing messages.

First click on "Remove" in the folder or message. The message has now been selected for physical removal. There are two possible situations. In the settings screen under "Delete and move messages" there is the option "Do you wish to move deleted messages to the deleted items folder, rather than mark them as deleted?”  This option allows you to specify what should happen once you have removed a message.

Situation A: the option is ticked
All deleted messages will be sent to the deleted items folder. Messages in the deleted items folder continue to take up storage space.  Empty your deleted items folder via the menu option: "Empty the deleted items folder" at the top of the menu bar.

Situation B: the option is not ticked
Deleted messages are marked as crossed out.  These messages continue to take up storage space. Remove these messages via the link "Remove deleted items" at the bottom right.
It is possible that you are unable to see any marked (crossed out) messages. At the top of the folder you can indicate whether or not you wish to show marked items:
  • Hide removed deleted items: marked messages are not shown
  • Show deleted items: marked messages are shown
