Start Account Self Service
A new application to change your password. Reset your password yourself in case you have forgotten it.
The main changes are:
Change your password via Self Service Account (not via uPrefs).
Sign up for the sms service in case your have forgotten your password via Self Service Account (not via uPrefs).
After updating your profile you can request your username or reset your password without the intervention of a helpdesk.
New users receive their username by email. They first have to activate their account and set the password during the process.
A password provided by the university must always be changed first before further use of the account.
Logging in Account Self Service and uPrefs occurs via Single Sign On.
Account Self Service is the application where you maintain your account and password. It contains the following options:
- Activate account
- Change password
- Update profile
- Setup security responses
- Reset password
- Request username
During login Account Self Service checks of the presence of:
external mail address
You will be asked to check the data and make changes if necessary. This data is used only for Account Self Service and will not be provisioned to other applications. Any changes you make will not be communicated to the system where you are registered.
The data above allow you to access your account without the intervention of a helpdesk in case you have forgotten your password or your password has expired. In order to identify yourself you need to be able to show evidence with "something you have" and "something you know".
Something you have is a medium that you have in your possession, such as a mailbox or mobile phone. In case you have forgotten your password you are unable to access your university mailboxes. For this reason the external address may not contain leidenuniv.nl. The mobile number should be in your possesion.
Something you know is information that only you know. These are the answers to questions already given by you.
Register this information before you forget your password. Only after registration of these data Account Self Service can contact and identify you. If you do not provide this information you need to contact a helpdesk to obtain a new password. It usually takes longer before you have access to your account again. In this case a new password will be provided only by post to the registered address, by sms (if you had signed up for this service before forgetting your password) or in person at a helpdesk.
Advice: update your profile and setyp your security responses.
Logging in into Account Self Service and uPrefs occurs via the Single Sign On environment of Leiden University (uAccess). If you already have used services of SURF (like SURFspot) you will be familiar with the login page.
For each login attempt uAccess will check whether you have entered your profile information and security responses and if your password will expire soon. If applicable, you will be directed to Account Self Service first to update these information or to change your password. You will then be directed to the original application for which you had to log in uAccess.

Account Activation applies to new users and to existing users whose account after a period of inactivity will be reactivated again. The manner in which the account details will be provided depends on the registration of an external address and mobile phone number:
If the administration has registered an external mail address the user receives an email at this address with the username and instructions to activate the account. During activation the user must identify himself with a mail message. At the end of the activation the user sets a password himself.
If the administration has not registered an external mail address, but has registered a mobile number the user receives a letter to the registered address with the username and instructions to activate the account. During activation the user must identify himself via a sms message. At the end of the activation the user sets a password himself.
If the administration has not registered an external address nor a mobile number the user receives a letter to the registered address with username and password. Activation is not required, but the user must change the provided password before further use.
The external mail address can not contain the value "leidenuniv.nl". Account details can not be sent to an university mailbox, since the user can not login to that mailbox yet.
New students already are registered with an external mail address (via Studielink or the student administration department). Therefore they receive the necessary information and instructions to activate their account by email. For new employees and guests/externals the provisioning of account details depends on the registration of an external mail address and mobile number. Advice: let the administration register these data, so you have access to your account quickly. In certain situations externals receive their account details by letter at the registration desk.
